The SA Tourism Commission's 'Encounter 2002' project celebrates the bicentenary of Matthew Flinders' meeting with Nicolas Baudin at Encounter Bay. In 2002 various events and exhibitions commemorate the English and French voyages of discovery which determined the shape of the Australian continent, contributed to the scientific knowledge of this country, and paved the way for later settlement of colonies including South Australia in the south and west of the continent. In addition to Adelaide celebrations, 'Encounter 2002' strongly encourages South Australian regional participation, and promotes international awareness of the State. Many South Australian memorials honour the achievements of Flinders, but to date Baudin has not received such extensive recognition.
