During the morning I had complaints from the crew about the bad quality of the salted meat which had just been distributed and which, in actual fact, was not good. It nevertheless came from a cask that was intact and in sound condition. I gave orders for it to be set aside so that another could be opened. But this one was even worse than the first. We had then recourse to a third which finally turned out to be very good. As we had only one more of these casks, we put off investigating its condition until the morrow.

The biscuit that we were using was not very wonderful either and had begun a long time earlier to crumble into dust, being riddled with worms and mites.
