In the early hours of the morning of 1 March 1954 the rumbling of an earthquake
awaked many in the Adelaide metropolitan area. The quake measured 5.5 on the
Richter scale and caused widespread minor damage, such as cracks in walls and
ceilings, fallen plaster and toppled chimneys, to homes and other buildings. An
estimated 30,000 buildings were damaged. No serious injuries were reported.
