Barque, 238 om; built Sulkea, opposite Calcutta 1827. Owner T. Ward of London. She departed London's Shadwell Basin on March 20th, 1836 via Gravesend [March 20-24], the Downs [March 24-April 2], Portland Roads [April 5-6] and Rio [June 21-July 8]. with Captain John Rolls and 84 passengers. CYGNET arrived Nepean Bay (Kangaroo Island) on September 11th, 1836 after putting into Rio de Janeiro for cuddy stores - 175 days, yet arrived 1 month after the Rapid - a great frustration to Colonel Light, as half his survey party were on this vessel).

Passenger and crew details were extracted from "Before the Buffalo, The Story of South Australia 1800-1836" by H.J. Finnis. Extracts included in periodical Newsletter No. 15 (Published by The Pioneers' Association of South Australia, Murray House, 77 Grenfell St, Adelaide, South Australia).

The South Australian Company's papers, deposited in the South Australian Archives, have made it possible to compile an authentic list of persons who embarked for South Australia in the Company's vessels".

CYGNET was chartered by the S.A. Colonization Commissioners from T. Ward, to assist Col. W. Light with surveying duties between November 9th and December 28th, 1836.

The South Australian Gazette and Colonia Register report: THE CYGNET - the fears expressed in our last for the safety of this vessel, have happily not been realised. After a passage of thirteen weeks, she has arrived in Encounter Bay. We are informed that the stock of sheep on board has suffered severely, and that a very small proportion of them were landed in safety.




CYGNET returned to England. She departed London September 24, 1840 with Captain Dalston, and arrived Adelaide on February 10, 1841.
