PIONEERS AND SETTLERS BOUND FOR SOUTH AUSTRALIA

SURRY 1838

Return Home

SURRY from London departed with Captain G Sinclair on June 15th 1838,
and arrived Adelaide Oct 11th, 1838 with 106 passengers (82 adults, 24 children).
Some records list this ship as SURREY which is incorrect.

The South Australian newspapers of the day often listed the names
of those passengers who presumably paid their own fares, and simply recorded
that there were other passengers on board.
Given this information, please understand that many of the Passenger Lists
for this period have been compiled from various sources,
and this list may not be a complete list.

DINNER OF APPRECIATION FOR CAPTAIN SINCLAIR

JOSEPH CLEGGETT

Arrival records seem to show there were two people named JOSEPH CLEGGETT. Perhaps they are the same person.

CLEDGETT, Joseph 24 [born c.1814] agricultural labourer and wife 23, Applic.1998,Embark.1599. On March 8th, 1838 Joseph and his wife applied for Free Passage to South Australia [Applic.1998] and were allotted berths [Embark.1599] onboard the RESOURCE, to leave London October 7th, 1838. Neither are listed on the Manifest for the RESOURCE which arrived SA January 23, 1839. Joseph is listed with a wife. Perhaps she died before the SURRY left London on June 15th 1838.

Perhaps Joseph was then able to secure one of the last berths on the SURRY so that he could come to SA with his brother Friend CLEGGETT [Applic.1997].

The BISA has a Joseph CLEGGETT [born 1813 Boxley KEN ENG], listed as a passenger onboard SURRY which left London on June 15th 1838, arriving Adelaide October 11th 1838. The BISA indicates that he married Caroline nee WADE on 27.1.1840 Adelaide SA.
