Born: March 16th 1774 in Donington, Lincolnshire, England Died: July 19th, 1814 in London, England Buried: St. James, Hampstead, England Matthew Flinders joined the Navy when aged fifteen and served on the ALERT and the PROVIDENCE. He sailed to Australia on the RELIANCE. In 1798 he circumnavigated Van Diemens Land aboard the NORFOLK, then returned to England March 3rd, 1800 on the RELIANCE. He married Ann Chappell on April 17th, 1801 at Partney, Lincoln, England (IGI record) Returned to Australia in command of the INVESTIGATOR and between December 1801 and June 1803 sailed around Australia. Flinders was held prisoner for six and a half years on Mauritius, released in June 1810 Their daughter Anne was born April 1st, 1812. Matthew Flinders wrote a book titled "A Voyage To Terra Australis", published in 1814 | ![]() |
