South Australia - Northern Lands Development and Allied Matters

    Miscellany

An article describing a bushman is in Adelaide Miscellany, page 104:

He wore a red serge shirt, girded at the waist with a leather belt, to which was attached a fur skin pouch, containing, as I afterwards learnt, his pipe and tobacco. On the pommel of his horse, a quart pot, and a pannikin... The legs of the bushman were clothed in thick woollen trousers, and stout shoes protected his feet; on his head was a straw hat of a neutral tint, garnished with a broad black ribbon, the ends of which fell naval fashion over the rim; he seemed to pride himself on the luxuriant crop of hair that flourished on his head and spread in the shape of whiskers, beard, etc, over his face... A double-barreled gun hung on one side of the saddle, and a long stock-whip was coiled up and suspended on the other.
