DESCRIPTION

The South Australian government established the provisions for the founding of communal settlements, known as village settlements, in a part of the Crown Lands Amendment Act in 1893. Thirteen village settlements were eventually founded in South Australia. Of these, eleven were on the River Murray.

Extracts of this article from The Observer newspaper state that the land around the River Murray has not yet been used to its full potential. They also applaud the pioneering spirit of those who have chosen to go to the village settlements, but warn that many of the settlers are not prepared for the work they will have to undertake.
