Imagine you're visiting the State Library and unexpectedly you find yourself being taken on a journey to another place or time. Maybe it's back to 1959 when television first went to air in South Australia, or to the battlefields of the First World War, or perhaps to the 18th and 19th centuries when the French explored our beautiful coastlines. This journey may evoke emotions you weren't expecting - did you shed a tear as you read a heart-warming, but sometimes heart-breaking story or laugh as you recalled a funny childhood memory?

The designer who danced with Helpmann

Date: 1 July 2016

Thelma Afford (1908-1996) is best known in Adelaide as the costume designer for the 1936 South Australian Centenary. In 1936 South Australia celebrated 100 years since the foundation of the state as a British colony, producing histories, plays and exhibitions to mark the achievements of the century. The grand finale of the year's celebrations was the 'Pageant of Progress', held in December.

Transcribing Tales: The diary of Augustus Short, first Bishop of Adelaide

Date: 6 July 2016

Augustus Short (1802-1883) was consecrated in Westminster Abbey on 29 June (St Peter's Day) 1847 as the first Anglican Bishop of Adelaide. Two months later he set sail for Adelaide on board the Derwent with his wife Millicent, their five children, and an entourage of at least two governesses, four servants, and three clergymen who had volunteered to come to the colony with him. Augustus Short was installed as Bishop of Adelaide in a service in the colony's oldest church, Holy Trinity, on 28 December 1847 - the 11th anniversary of the proclamation of the colony.

At the end of 2015 students and educators from Gilles Street Primary School and Adelaide High School worked with our Community Learning team on a research project framed around the State Library's exhibition, A Theatre Inside the Book: Paper engineering from the collections of the State Library of South Australia.

From Shandong to South Australia on an international cultural exchange

The State Library of South Australia and Shandong Provincial Library signed an Agreement in May 2015 to promote cultural exchanges and cooperation between the two libraries. Personnel exchange is an important part of the Agreement, and we were fortunate enough to be chosen as library interns to study in South Australia.

The Friends of the State Library of South Australia is the oldest Friends organisation of any cultural institution in Australia, having been founded in 1932 during the Great Depression. The Friends continue to raise money to allow the State Library to purchase rare and interesting works, particularly those related to the history of South Australia.

David Roberts’ Egypt - A Library Treasure

Between 1838 and 1840 Scotsman David Roberts spent long periods travelling through the Middle East sketching the glories of Ancient Egypt and the sacred sites of the Holy Land (Israel). He later published these sketches as lithographs.
