ALIA is coming to Adelaide

Date: 17 June 2016

Look out for an influx of librarians in our fair city of Adelaide towards the end of August. From 29 August until 2 September the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) are holding their National Conference at the Adelaide Convention Centre.

ALIA National Conference in Adelaide 29 August to 2 September 2016
ALIA National Conference in Adelaide 29 August to 2 September 2016

The ALIA National Conference provides the opportunity for all library and information professionals to:

  • network and build partnerships amongst our colleagues, peers, industry leaders and corporate partners
  • keep abreast of the latest in professional practice and research from across Australia and overseas, and
  • contribute to the body of knowledge and to the evolution of the profession.

The theme for this year's conference is 'Engage, Create, Lead'. The library is often thought of as the third space - not home, not work, but somewhere else - a retreat, an escape, a place to learn, create, socialise and develop.  Libraries are places, whether physical or virtual, that bring people and information together. It is the information professionals that make this possible as we help people, communities, organisations and government to examine, understand, access and share valuable information.

A highlight of the conference will be international keynote speaker Barbara Schack from Libraries Without Borders. Barbara will speak of Libraries Without Borders' creative approaches to addressing educational challenges globally in order to improve access to information and culture for all, even in the most remote places.

State Library of South Australia staff will be presenting workshops and giving tours to our industry colleagues. Topics include:

  • matters of copyright guidelines and risk framework
  • how libraries are building digital citizenship
  • digital service delivery
  • freedom of access to information
  • State Library's extensive Wine Literature Collection, and
  • ensuring learning experiences reflect student voices and offer younger generations deeper engagement with the collections and stories of the State Library.

There will also be tours of other South Australian libraries, galleries and museums, virtual reality demonstrations, and discussions on best practice for digitisation and descriptive metadata - to allow history to come alive and become easily accessible online.

Participation in the ALIA National Conference provides a forum to collaborate and allows us to become stronger as professionals and as an industry.
