Date: 6 July 2016

The Friends of the State Library of South Australia is the oldest Friends organisation of any cultural institution in Australia, having been founded in 1932 during the Great Depression. The Friends continue to raise money to allow the State Library to purchase rare and interesting works, particularly those related to the history of South Australia.

One of their most important, and popular, series has been the translations of the journals of the French explorers of the early 19th century, on the voyage led by Nicolas Baudin from 1801 to 1803.

They have published:

  • Nicolas Baudin, Journal of Post Captain Nicolas Baudin, translated by Christine Cornell (2004)
  • Fran ois Péron, Voyage of Discovery to the Southern Lands, Books I-III, translated by Christine Cornell (2006)
  • Fran ois Péron, Voyage of Discovery to the Southern Lands, Books IV, translated by Christine Cornell (2003). This publication was assisted with funds from Terra Australis 2001, a French-Australian committee chaired by M. Michel Rocard
  • Fran ois Péron, Voyage of Discovery to the Southern Lands, Books V, translated by Christine Cornell (2007). This book, in paperback only, contains Péron's dissertations on various scientific topics.

French Designs on Colonial New South Wales completes the set of publications emanating from the Baudin voyage. It contains the first ever English translation of Péron's Mémoire sur les établissements anglais la Nouvelle Hollande, la terre de Diémen et dans les archipels du grand océan Pacifique.
