Amidst the cold, greyness and wet of winter, the work of the State Library continues to shine out as a beacon of warmth and light.

As you can see from the incredible breadth in this edition, it ranges from the earliest days of the settlement of South Australia to the theatrical and design world of Adelaide in the 1930s right up to our wonderful exhibitions we have held this year. A common thread through all this is how our highly skilled and knowledgeable staff use every resource, technology and format available to them to share our collections with you and the wider world.

To steal a marvellous tripartite phrase from one of our sister institutions, the State Library of New South Wales, this allows us to engage with our users 'On site, On line and On tour'. It is so important that we continue to use all three of these avenues in creative and innovative ways. In doing so our extraordinary collections that we hold in trust for all time, may be used for the education, erudition and enjoyment of the public. Whilst we need to make this as easy and accessible as possible it needs to be underpinned by considerable scholarship and intellectual rigour.

The expertise, experience and skill of our staff and volunteers in all stages of the life cycle of our collections - acquisition, processing, preservation, storage, access and much more - are the power source of that beacon. A beacon that heartens us and shines such a radiant light on our past, present and future.
