Early Learning | kindy to year 2

Designed for students in kindergarten through to year 2

Learning programs at the State Library are designed to be linked to key learning outcomes and complement the current Australian Curriculum. These programs have been created to connect learners with the rich history, collections, spaces and exhibitions of the State Library of South Australia.

Students will discover the stories of South Australia and the role of the State Library in collecting, preserving and sharing the history of South Australia and develop important life skills or research, inquiry and analysis techniques using a variety of sources.

Explore-a-story [opportunity 2]

Time: 10.30am to 12.30pm

Location: Meet in State LIbrary forecourt

Note: Free, Bookings essential

Learners will pop on an explorer vest and discover the treasures, stories and spaces of the State Library, developing their noticing skills and using their senses to explore. The visit concludes in the beautiful Mortlock Chamber sharing works by South Australian authors and illustrators. This program is sensory-friendly. Designed and facilitated by an experienced early years teacher.

Suitability: Kindy to year 2
Duration: 2 hours
Capacity: up to 30 students
Supervision: 1:4 (Kindy) 1:5 (Reception to year 2)

Students engaging in Community Learning programs at the State Library

My History [opportunity 2]

Date: 11 February 2019 to 12 April 2019

Time: 10.30am to 12.30pm

Location: Meet in State LIbrary forecourt

Note: Free, Bookings essential

Explore the role of story in sharing and preserving histories. Uncover the way collections can hold stories and memories through exploring the beautiful Mortlock Chamber. Learners will design and make a personal memory box to capture their unique stories. Designed and facilitated by an experienced early years teacher.

Phil Cummings-Dream Big 2019

Phil Cummings: Stories Behind the Books- part of the Dream Big Festival [opportunity 2]

Date: 6 May 2019 to 5 July 2019

Time: 10.30 and 12pm to 12.30 and 2pm

Location: Meet in the forecourt under plane tree

Note: Bookings essential - Term 2 only

Your State Library holds in its collection, many of the secrets and stories of award-winning South Australian author, Phil Cummings. These secrets will be revealed in an interactive exhibition featuring his award-winning books through to copies of his original manuscripts. Learners will be inspired to create their own literary responses. Video conference opportunities will be on offer for regional schools.

Co-designed with Phil Cummings and children from Peterborough, and facilitated by an experienced primary years teacher.

This program will be part of the Dream Big celebration beginning on May 22 2019.

NB.This program is only available in Term 2 in conjunction with the exhibition which will end July 5.

Bookings will not be available until early 2019.

Learning opportunities explained

Each learning opportunity offered, stands alone. We are offering several different opportunities but they are not a series.

  • Opportunity 1: Introduces groups of students to a range of State Library resources with a focus on specific curriculum subjects.
  • Opportunity 2: Designed to engage learners with the roles, stories and collections of the State Library. These programs are aligned to ACARA and the Teaching for Effective Learning Framework.
  • Opportunity 3: Guided tours of the Library.
  • Opportunity 4: Unlock the past and discover the future with dramatic re-enactments of the subject offered.

What to bring

  • Bring all food and drink in a group crate.
  • Medication may be carried by the adult supervisor in a backpack.

School bags

  • Preferred option is to leave school bags at school.
  • If it is necessary for students to bring their bags they will be required to leave these with Security staff for the duration of their program.
