Students engaging in Community Learning programs at the State Library

Explore the role of story in sharing and preserving histories. Uncover the way collections can hold stories and memories through exploring the beautiful Mortlock Chamber. Learners will design and make a personal memory box to capture their unique stories. Designed and facilitated by an experienced early years teacher.

History is made up of many, many stories and this program engages children in examining their own personal stories and histories. They will explore the State Library to uncover the way collections hold memories and create take-home memory boxes to capture their own unique stories.

Key inquiry questions

  • What is my personal story?
  • How is my story the same and different from others?
  • What people, events, activities and places do i care about? Why?

The learning experiences are aligned with the Australian Curriculum, with a particular emphasis on the learning area of Humanities and Social sciences: History, and the general capabilities of literacy, intercultural understanding and critical and creative thinking. Teaching for Effective Learning principles strongly underpin the learning design.

All tools and materials will be provided by the State Library of South Australia free of charge.
