Play is an important part of all our lives but what is play and why do people play? How can playing games help us to time travel into our past?

Suitability: years 4 - 7
Cost: Free
Duration: 2 hours (Arrive 10am for 10.30 start)
Days: Monday - Friday (excluding school and public holidays)
Capacity: Class of 30 students maximum
Supervision: 1:6
Facilitator: Education Officer

Explore these questions through historical games and stories from the State Library's collections. Students will learn about significant people, places and events at different moments in South Australia's history.

A fascinating look into the world of play, this learning program was created for, by and with children.

Inquiry questions

HASS | How has our community changed? What features have been lost and what features have been retained?
HASS | What were the significant events and who were the significant people that shaped South Australian communities?

Learning experiences

Children will:

  • identify the UN Rights of the Child in relation to play
  • play with historic board games from Australia's past that explore transport, exploration, the gold rush and sport
  • inquire into the past, accessing State Library primary and secondary sources
  • create a short video that documents research findings

Curriculum

This learning program is designed with the Australian Curriculum and Teaching for Effective Learning frameworks.

Learning areas are integrated throughout this program with a particular focus on HASS | History.
