Student taking part in the Belonging program

Discover how State Library sources can provide insight into the past that can inform the present and future. Learners will examine relationships between people, places and events within communities, and the power to create positive, sustainable change, inspired by State Library collection material and Jeannie Baker's text, Belonging. Learners will create a miniature collage reflecting their own preferred environment of the future.

Suitability: years 3 to 6
Duration: 3.5 hours (includes 30 minute break)
Days: Monday to Friday
Capacity: up to 30 students
Facilitator: Designed and facilitated by an experienced primary years teacher.

This program engages learners in an exploration of the concept of belonging and the ways that we nurture and are nurtured by environments and communities. Learners will use primary and secondary source material from the State Library collections to examine places that have changed over time.

Key inquiry questions

  • What does it mean to belong?
  • How do people contribute to their communities?
  • How and why do environments change over time?
  • How do people and environments influence one another?

The learning experiences are aligned with the Australian Curriculum, with a particular emphasis on the learning areas of Humanities and Social Sciences: History and Geography and the general capabilities of literacy, intercultural understanding and creative thinking.

Teaching for Effective Learning principles strongly underpin the learning design.

All tools and materials will be provided by the State Library of South Australia free of charge.
