The Opposite of Bored: Researching SA History through Board Games [opportunity 2]

The Opposite of Bored

Collaborate in teams to discover moments in South Australia's history. Learners will practice historical skills through playing and analysing board games from the past, and researching primary and secondary sources from the State Library's collection that relate to their game. Each team will interpret and communicate their learning by creating a short documentary.

Suitability: years 4 to 7
Duration: 3.5 hours (includes a 30 minute break)
Days: Monday to Friday
Capacity: up to 30 students
Supervision: 1:6
Facilitator: Co-designed with primary learners and facilitated by an experienced primary years teacher.

Key inquiry questions

  • How and why do people choose to remember significant events of the past?
  • What were the significant events and who were the significant people that shaped South Australia?

Teaching for Effective Learning principles strongly underpin the learning design, which is aligned with the Australian Curriculum, with a particular emphasis on the learning area of Humanities and Social Sciences: History and Geography and the general capabilities of literacy, intercultural understanding and creative thinking.

All tools and materials will be provided by the State Library of South Australia free of charge.
