The Opposite of Bored

Explore moments in South Australia's history through board games from the State Library's collection. Learners will practice historical skills through playing, analysing, researching and interpreting board games from the past.

Suitability: years 3 to 5
Duration: 3.5 hours (Includes half hour for lunch)
Days: Monday to Friday
Capacity: up to 30 students
Supervision: 1:6
Facilitator: experienced primary years Teacher

Did you know that the State Library holds a collection of historical board games that tell stories about people, places and events in South Australia's history? Learners will practice historical skills of questioning, researching and analysing using selected primary and secondary sources. They will make a short video to communicate their discoveries.

Key inquiry questions

  • How and why do people choose to remember significant events of the past?
  • What were the significant events and who were the significant people that shaped South Australia?

Teaching for Effective Learning principles strongly underpin this learning experience, which is aligned with the Australian Curriculum, with a particular emphasis on the learning area of:

  • Humanities and Social Sciences: History and Geography and the general capabilities of literacy, intercultural understanding and creative thinking.

Tools and materials are provided free of charge by the State Library of South Australia.
