The Centre of Democracy: Passion and Participation 2018

Time: 10am to 2pm

Location: The Hub at the State Library of SA

Note: Free, bookings essential

This learning program engages the learners in an exploration of the concept of finding a voice through democracy. Through self-discovery activities within the space students will become aware of key individuals, events and artifacts that helped shape the concept of democracy that is evident today.

Suitability: years 5 to 7
Days: Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday

Key inquiry questions

  • How have individuals and groups in the past and present contributed to the development of Australia?
  • How have people enacted their values and perceptions about their community, other people and places, past and present?
  • How have key figures, events and values shaped Australian society, its system of government and citizenship?
  • How have experiences of democracy and citizenship differed between groups over time and place?

The learning experiences are aligned with the Australian Curriculum, with particular emphasis on the learning area of Humanities and Social Science: Civics and Citizenship, and the general capabilities of literacy, critical and creative thinking and visual arts. Teaching for Effective Learning principles strongly underpin the learning design.

Tools and materials will be provided by the State Library and the Centre of Democracy free of charge.

The Centre of Democracy is a place in Adelaide to explore the people and ideas that have shaped democracy in South Australia. Discover the past and discuss the role young people have in determining the future. They will begin to identify their voice in democracy and develop a sense of identity.
