Aboriginal Australians are advised that this exhibition includes images and recordings of Aboriginal people who have passed away. These images and recordings are exhibited with the permission of the Adnyamathanha Traditional Lands Association.

Ruins are rich sites of material memory and they offer insight into the passage of time. UNSETTLED invites you to rediscover colonial ruin in the Flinders Ranges through a mixture of media art, photography, archival imagery and documentary interviews.

The exhibition seeks to move beyond the nostalgia typical of settler-colonial representations and unearth stories obscured by colonial rubble - stories told, for instance, by the Adnyamathanha people upon whose lands these ruins stand, and the inhabitants of the "ghost town" of Beltana.

Images from the State Library of South Australia's Mountford-Sheard Collection, taken by Charles Mountford at the Nepabunna Mission in the 1930s, are also featured in the exhibition.

UNSETTLED has been produced by Grayson Cooke and Dea Morgain in partnership with the State Library of South Australia and the Adnyamathanha Traditional Lands Association.

Featuring on the Story Wall

As part of this exhibition the State Library's Story Wall is now showing two new stories:

  • UNSETTLED: Beltana No Western
  • UNSETTLED: Nepabunna Mission 1937

Both stories use images from the Library's Mountford-Sheard Collection.
