The State Library has a program of events and activities which support the One mountain, one river, one sage: Treasures from the Shandong Library exhibition.

The history of tea

Date: 25 September 2018

Location: Circulating Library, Institute Building

Note: $25 per person, bookings essential

Celebrate Confucius' birthday by immersing yourself in an intimate tea tasting experience.

Crazy Caps: school holiday program

Date: 3 October 2018 to 4 October 2018

Time: 10am to 12noon

Location: Ground floor, State Library Gallery entrance

Note: Free, bookings essential.

Suitable for: ages 6 to 12 years

Sessions: 3 and 4 October at 10am

Discover how important hats were to signify status and roles and who wore hats at various points in history. Then design and decorate a hat that you might wear for a special occasion.

Special exhibition floor talks

Date: 4 October 2018 to 19 January 2019

Location: The State Library Gallery

Note: Free, bookings essential

Sessions: 4 October at 6:15pm, 29 October at 10:30am and 11:30am, 19 January 2019 at 10:30am and 11:30am

Join a representative from the Confucius Institute as they guide you through the exhibition, sharing their insight on the significance of the works through stories and cultural experiences.

Traditional Chinese art for kids

Date: 9 October 2018 to 12 October 2018

Time: 11am and 2pm

Location: Institute Room, Institute Building

Note: Free, bookings essential

 

Suitable for: ages 8 to 12 years.

Sessions: 9 and 12 October, 10am and 2pm

Have fun learning about Chinese culture through traditional art activities.

Collection archaeology, a conservator's perspective

The State Library and Shandong Library share similar goals to collect and preserve the history and stories of our communities.

Experience Shandong at the Library

Date: 4 November 2018

Time: 11am to 3pm

Location: Your Hub

Drop into the Hub and try your hand at virtual archery, Chinese calligraphy,. learn to play weiqi, and join Professor Thaddeus Plumkin as he journeys through Shandong and shares stories of ancient traditions.

Devotion from afar: Visions of Xuanzang’s journey from China through the ‘five regions of India’

Date: 22 November 2018

Time: 6.30pm

Join Russell Kelty, Associate Curator of Asian Art at the Art Gallery of South Australia, as he discusses Chinese Buddhist monk Xuanzang, and his journey to the West.

An Oriental Flair, at the State Library

Date: 7 December 2018

Time: 6.30pm to 7.30pm

Location: State Library forecourt

Note: Free

Come enjoy an evening under the stars with Oriental Flair, an 8-piece ensemble of eastern harps and western strings from the School of Chinese Music and Arts.
