State Library of South Australia

South Australiana

The collection and preservation of material relating to South Australia and its people, is a primary role of the State Library. In many cases we hold the only remaining documented copy of an item. Materials in the collection date from before formal colonisation, in 1836, to the present day, including the Northern Territory before 1911. Many items have been donated by members of the South Australian community. They include:

  • published material, eg books, pamphlets, newspapers, magazines, maps, ephemera collections such as menus, theatre programmes and audiovisual material
  • a copy of every item published in South Australia
  • unpublished material produced by businesses, organisations and individuals eg. letters, diaries, minutes, photographs and oral histories.

Large or fragile items, such as newspapers and indexes are copied onto microfilm or microfiche to protect and preserve them while making them available for public use.

All items published by a South Australian publisher are required to be deposited with the State Library of South Australia free of charge under the legal deposit provisions of the Libraries Act 1982.

You can receive a regular update of newly acquired South Australiana via an RSS feed.
