State Library of South Australia

Family history

The State Library Family History Collection specialises in South Australian resources. It is also strong in material relating to England and Ireland and includes a selection of interstate and other overseas resources.

The Family History Collection is in the Spence Wing on Level 1. A staff member is stationed in the area weekdays from 10am to 5pm. Outside these hours, assistance is available at the information desk. While we can show you how to use the resources, we are not able to conduct searches on your behalf.

New guides under development

The State Library of South Australia is currently reviewing the way Family History services are represented on our website. Based upon customer requirements and licensing restrictions for our databases (which unfortunately means we cannot provide access offsite), we will be presenting a number of new guides over the next few months using the Libguides application available from Springshare.

If you have any comments or wish to contribute ideas, please email us at info@slsa.sa.gov.au with the words Family History guides in the header of the email and let us know of your recommendation.

In the meantime, check out our new guides:

Who are the genealogists?

This 'Who Are the Genealogists of Australia' survey of Australian genealogists is part of a master's research program at the University of New England. It is designed to find out what motivates family historians and how and where they conduct their research.
