Supporting us

The State Library owes many of its strengths to the generosity of South Australians.

Volunteer with us

Volunteers undertake roles that extend accessibility to our collections and promote the Library to visitors.

Our friends and the foundation

Formed during the depression of the 1930s to help the Library buy ordinary book requirements, the Friends of the State Library later concentrated on funding the purchase of fine books, manuscripts and works of art the Library would not otherwise have been able to afford. The Friends celebrated their 75th birthday in July 2007.

The State Library of South Australia Foundation set itself the task of raising an initial amount of $3 million through corporate and public contributions to assist projects like SA Memory which makes the rich picture of the state's culture and heritage available to everyone via the internet.

The Friends of the Paul McGuire Maritime Library is an incorporated association, established in 1981 to support the Paul McGuire Maritime Library.

Bequest, gift or donate

There is a strong community tradition of donating material to the State Library. Most of the Library's letters, diaries, photographs, menus, wine labels, toys and games were donated by people who wished to see their precious items preserved for future generations to use and enjoy.

Gifts and bequests are a way of giving back to the community. For gifts of significant cultural items the Cultural Gifts Program offers donors a tax deduction for the market value of their gifts.
