Indigenous collections and services

The State Library of South Australia acknowledges that Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islanders are the first people and Traditional Owners of Australia.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander library collections and services are a fundamental part of the State Library's core business. The Library holds a number of significant Indigenous anthropological archival collections; improving access to these is a focus. Reference services are mainstreamed with specialist assistance for detailed enquiries. Services include:

  • Research into SLSA Indigenous collections
  • Providing advice on SLSA Indigenous collections
  • Processing, cataloguing and indexing SLSA Indigenous collections
  • Raising awareness with enquirers of special access conditions to Indigenous materials
  • Liaising with communities and enquirers requesting copies or access to SLSA Indigenous materials
  • Developing partnerships with the communities and like institutions
  • Publishing and developing contextual online information on Indigenous collections
  • Collaborating and participating in Indigenous events and programs.

The Library operates within national policies for the management of Indigenous services and collections.
