State Library of South Australia

Access to South Australian Birth, Death and Marriage records

The State Library endeavours to provide links to online family history databases wherever possible.

The Births, Deaths and Marriages Registration Office is responsible for maintaining registers of births, deaths and marriages, and they have not made an online searching facility available. It is possible to apply for a certificate online, but only if you already know the details.

You can provide feedback to The Births, Deaths and Marriages Registration Office.

In March 2012 Genealogy SA published extracts from the indexes online. The information is equivalent to indexes published online by most Australian  states. Information about these and other databases can be found at the Genealogy SA website.

Other states and territories allow online searching and you can connect to their online searching facilities through via the CoraWeb website.

The exception to this is the Northern Territory. Some of their BDM records can be found in South Australian indexes.

The State Library cannot provide copies of certificates as the library only has indexes. The indexes are available on CDROM in the State Library of South Australia and other State libraries across Australia. The Library is open daily, however, if you are unable to visit, we invite you to submit a query via our Ask Us Service.

The dates covered by the indexes are limited by the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages Access Policy

  • South Australian Birth Registrations 1842 to 1928
  • South Australian Death Registrations 1842 1972
  • South Australian Marriage Registrations 1842 to 1937

Due to licensing restrictions the State Library cannot offer access to Ancesty Library Edition to home users. However, it is available at local council libraries.

To assist your research, the State Library has compiled a number of family history guides.
