Genealogy Gems family history related talks at the State Library of SA

Come and join us at the State Library of SA as we present a series of free family history talks on the third Thursday each month at 1pm.

This year the program runs from March through to November, all session are free but booking is essential. We look forward to seeing you!

16 November - Utterly destitute: researching social welfare stories at the State Records of South Australia

State Records is the archive for state and local government in South Australia. Their historical social welfare records include details of admissions into the Destitute Asylum and the Lying-in Home, and information about children who were "boarded out" or sentenced to a Reformatory. Join us to learn more about the social welfare system in South Australia and how you can access these official records.

19 October - Are you, your family or ancestors in the State Library's photographic collections 1940 to 1970?
The State Library has acquired two mid-20th Century major collections, the Eric Arthur Collection from Mount Gambier and the Vic Grimmett Collection from Adelaide. These collections contain photographs of families and individuals, most at least partially identified. Learn about these collections and their insights into family history.

20 April - Finding the Australian soldier in your family, accessing defence records from the National Archives of Australia
Boer War attestation papers, WW1 Repatriation files, Courts-Martial proceedings, WW2 Army pay files - the National Archives holds a wealth of Defence related material from 1901 onwards. Come and find out what these records may reveal about the soldier in your family history.
