The State Library of South Australia has an extensive collection of images comprised of photographs (1850 - present), artwork and postcards of which more than 110,000 images have been digitised and are viewable through the Library catalogue or Trove which allows access to significant online pictorial collections across Australia at the same time.

Collection highlights

Townsend Duryea
A noted photographer of colonial South Australia, active 1855-1875; known for panoramas of Adelaide, images of rural areas of South Australia and portraits of surviving original European colonists.


Samuel White Sweet
A significant photographer of colonial South Australia, known as the colony's foremost landscape photographer of the 1870s.


Ernest Gall
South Australian born photographer, active 1880s-1920s, noted for images of civic events, portraits and photographs showing Adelaide's development into a growing modern city.


D Darian Smith
Active in South Australia from the First World War to the 1970s, noted for photographs of contemporary life and aerial photography.


World War I
Portraits of soldiers, marches, camps, group shots, on location in the Dardanelles and Western front, activities on the home front, memorial dedications and captured German and Turkish images.


Searcy Collection
Photographs taken or collected by Arthur Searcy featuring localities across the state, buildings, portraits, social and historical events, industry and transport, particularly from the 1870s to the 1920s.

Godson Collection
Over 16,000 photographs of paddle steamers, river vessels and riverports including historic River Murray scenes.


AD Edwardes Collection
Over 8,000 images of sailing ships from around the world, particularly from 1865 to 1920.


Harold Cazneaux
Described as the father of modern Australian photography, worked in Adelaide from the 1890s to 1904 then continued his photographic career in Sydney.


Arthur Collection
Arthur & Son studio operated in Mount Gambier from 1904 to 1989; offers a unique visual history of the people, places and events in the region, particularly from the 1930s to the 1970s.
