News from the Friends

Date: 29 May 2015

The Friends have just received some very good news about our most recent Australiana publication, French designs on colonial New South Wales, by Jean Fornasiero and John West-Sooby. The book was awarded a bronze medal in the 2015 Independent Book Publishers awards, known as the IPPY awards.

These international awards recognise excellence in independent publishing. Copies of this book, which contain the first English translation of Francois Péron's secret report to Napoleon about how to invade New South Wales and make the British colony a French possession, are still available from the office or may be ordered online through our Australiana website.

The long-awaited paperback edition of the Atlas from the Baudin Voyage of Discovery series is being printed and will be available soon. For more information see our Australiana website or visit the Friends of the State Library website.

Our June speaker at Wednesdays@One was Simon Royal from ABC Radio. He gave a knowledgeable and passionate talk focussing on his interest in American history, with special emphasis on the Kennedys. He especially discussed the classic, Death of a President by William Manchester, among other titles. It made those of us who were around at the time think about what we were doing the day in November 1963 when President John F Kennedy was assassinated. Our July speaker is Liz Harfull - author, Wakefield Press.

Recent activities have included a visit to the Army Museum at the Keswick Barracks and a White Gloves talk by Anthony Laube and Valmai Hankel on some of the treasures which the Friends have presented to the Library over the years. The next treasures talk is on Wednesday 21 October and is open to the general public. Contact Carolyn Potts, Friends' Executive Officer, via phone 8207 7255 or for booking and payment details.
