Reading Matters, Australia's biggest and brightest celebration of Young Adult literature, has been on the road and recently stopped off in South Australia.

Jared Thomas and Sally Gardner on tour in SA

For the first time the State Library of South Australia partnered with the Centre for Youth Literature, State Library Victoria, to bring two outstanding authors to talk about their challenges and motivation for becoming writers.

The authors were Sally Gardner, a multi-award-winning novelist whose work has been translated into more than 22 languages, and local author Jared Thomas an Indigenous author and academic.

The journey for both authors has been quite different. Sally has dyslexia and didn't learn to read until she was 14. She went onto graduate from Central St. Martin's Art School with First Class Honours. She is an avid spokesperson for Dyslexia, working to change the way it is perceived by society.

At school Jared enjoyed sport and music. It wasn't until 1992 after seeing a play by an Aboriginal playwright that he decided to study humanities and writing. He is the author of Sweet Guy, Dallas Davis: the Scientist and the City Kids and Calypso Summer.

The SA tour included events hosted by the State Library of South Australia, Holdfast Bay Council and City of West Torrens. The authors then expanded their reach to Yorketown and to Jared's home town of Port Augusta. Quite a whirlwind tour over three days, but whilst their time in SA was short, they have left behind over 450 inspired and encouraged young people and adults.
