News from the Friends

Date: 7 April 2015

Wednesdays @ One for 2015 got off to an outstanding start with a lively and interesting talk by Brian Oldman, Director of the SA Museum. We even moved into Museum territory, holding the talk in the Museum's Armoury Building. Mr Oldman shared his reading interests at English schools and universities, leading to his discovery of American fiction, while working in the US. He also introduced the Friends to some fascinating but little known Japanese authors and books, especially I am a Cat by Soseki Natsume, which he discovered while working in Japan.

Master bookbinder, Anthony Zammit PSM, long-time State Library and ArtLab employee, was the speaker at April's Wednesday @ One. Anthony spoke about the many processes involved in the restoration of books and showed examples of his bookbinding. Anthony binds many of the superb 'special editions' of the Friends' publications.

Rose Alwyn, former Master of St Mark's College, is the speaker at May's Wednesday @ One (6th May 2015). Rose was the first woman head of the St Mark's College and has 25 years' experience working with young people, as an educator and in leadership roles.

The next publication from the Friends is in response to the high demand from book buyers. The Friends' edition of the magnificent Atlas from the Nicolas Baudin voyage of exploration to Australia in 1800-04 has been out of print for some time. Lovers of beautiful books will be thrilled to know that it will soon be available in an affordable paperback edition. The Atlas contains maps and charts, but is best known for the magnificent drawings by Charles-Alexandre Lesueur and Nicolas-Martin Petit of Australian and Timorese scenery, people, animals and plants. Contact the Friends' office on 8207 7255 to order your copy.
