State Library of South Australia

Director's cut

Spring is a time of abundant growth, renewal, hope and fresh beginnings. All of these eternal verities of Spring will be greatly in evidence at the State Library over the coming months and beyond as you can see from the articles in this issue. The oldest part of our Library, the venerable Institute Building will emerge from the shabbiness of winter (and the 28 years since it was last painted) as a bright, glorious bloom when the scaffolding comes down in February next year. I am delighted that its current faded grandeur will be faded no longer and its two components - the 1861 and the 1907 wings - will be resplendent in a recreation of their first unified colour scheme of 1908.

Continuing the Spring theme, fashion in this country - particularly millinery - is so often associated with the Spring racing season. Right on cue we will both host a fashion exhibition here and contribute one from our own collections as well. This social history look at some elements of Australian fashion will complement the brilliant fashion exhibition at the Art Gallery of South Australia. This is another example of the way in which all the cultural institutions along North Terrace and further afield try to work together to assist each other's public programming. Our exhibition programme this year has been Spring, like in its growth as the extraordinary success of the Lost Diggers exhibition makes plain.

The new tendrils extend to our digital offerings as well as what is happening in the physical world of our spaces and collections on North Terrace. As Spring flows effortlessly into Summer, the life, experiences, knowledge and learning that the State Library and its staff and volunteers afford to the people of South Australia will continue to burgeon and flourish.

Please enjoy reading this issue and we look forward to sharing more with you next time.
