In 1872 businessman Emanuel Solomon commissioned photographer Henry Jones to create 'The Old Colonists Banquet Group' of men. It commemorates a free banquet Solomon held at the Adelaide Town Hall on 28 December 1871 for fellow colonists 'who date their arrival before 1841'.

Lighting update in the Institute Gallery
We're updating the lighting in the Institute Gallery. The Gallery will be closed from Monday, 21 November until further notice.
Our exhibition, A Few of Our Favourite Things, is still showing in the Treasures Wall and other areas of the Institute Building.

Retrieval of collection items from the State Library's offsite store is temporarily unavailable due to the extreme weather conditions this week (28-30 September 2016).
The situation is being monitored and retrievals will resume as soon as is practical.

Missing South Australian newspaper at the British Library

There has recently been a special connection between the British Library and the State Library of South Australia, resulting in the British Library providing a digitised copy of an interesting early South Australian publication which we had previously not held in our collection.

Short term restrictions in the forecourt

With the 100th anniversary of WW1 in 2014, and the Gallipoli campaign being commemorated in 2015, members of the ACH Group arts community created poppies as a meaningful way to remember the people who lost their lives in war and those who serves all around the world.
A World Away: South Australia’s War
To explore the events of WWI from a local and social perspective, History SA and the State Library of South Australia have created a new blog - A World Away: South Australia's War to help people understand the complexity of these events. It represents the war through the words of those who were there, month by month, as events unfolded.
