State Library of South Australia

New WW1 images

Date: 19 August 2013

With the approach of the Centenary of WW1, the State Library is digitising precious original pictures, letters and records to help South Australians trace their ANZAC history.

On ANZAC day this year, the Library jointly released with State Records over 800 images on a new Flickr group, South Australians of World War 1: Share their story.

The Library's images were largely drawn from its recently digitised Chamberlain Collection.

The announcement prompted several people to contact the Library including South Australian photo historian Ron Blum, who owned a collection of 46 glass plate negatives of World War 1 soldiers.

Ron was able to provide valuable evidence as to the provenance of the negatives he owned which are so similar in many aspects to the Library's Chamberlain Collection, it's hard to imagine their coming from a different source.

Mr Blum very generously donated his 46 glass plate negatives and other items to the State Library's collection and we are now making them available for all South Australians on our Flickr site.

As with the original images loaded on to the site, we are inviting the community to help us identify those pictured and tell their stories, including service details and biographical information.

Our Library guide includes tips on how people can contribute to the group and provides them with research leads.
