State Library of South Australia

Assessing items offered for donation

Adding any item to a state library's collection requires a commitment to process or catalogue it, and house, preserve and make it accessible, all of which requires staff, financial and physical resources. For these reasons, a state library must assess any item offered for donation before adding it to its collection.

The Library's Collection Development Policy will guide this decision and unfortunately not all items can be accepted. For example, archival material might not be accepted if the Library already has sufficient examples of that type. Photographs of unidentified people have a reduced research value and may not be suitable.
