All sessions include a tour to identify and locate physical resources in the family history area.

Session 4 - Exploring immigration resources

Explore immigration - your forebears as passengers arriving and departing from overseas and interstate. Discover the ships they were on and their experiences on the journey in ship's diaries we may hold. You may also find photographs or illustrations of the ships they arrived in SA on. Then we'll move onto location resources to find where they lived in SA using directories and electoral rolls, land ownership and our maps collection.

Session 5 - Ancillary resources

In this session we look at the ancillary resources that tease out other types of information to flesh out your family history research: military records, government records, and newspapers as a tool for family history.

This recap session brings it all together. You can go behind the scenes to see the State Library's basement storage, map collection and other types of treasures that we hold in our non-public areas.

Session 1  - How to navigate State Library Resources

Thursday 21 March

Learn how to best navigate our State Library Resources. Areas explored include introduction to our catalogue, library guides, how to begin your family history quest, accessing archival and online materials and the rules of engagement! This session forms the essential basis for best using the State Library's genealogical treasures.

Session 2 - In-depth look at Library Guides, online databases and much more

In this session, we'll look more in depth at our Library Guides, print hardcopy resources and online databases such as Trove, Ancestry Library and Find My Past. Learn how to use our publicly available PCs to access the varied formats that our resources come in. See a practical demonstration on how to use our microfilm and microfiche equipment.

Session 3 - Births, deaths and marriages

This session is part of the History Festival.

We begin with birth, deaths and marriages (BDM), the essential starting point. We'll look at their media formats, access options in the State Library, and searching tips and tricks, supporting miscellaneous indexes and the church BDM archival material held by us.

How do I get to the State Library by public transport?

The 'State Library, Art Gallery, Museum' tram-stop is just outside the State Library. There are bus stops close by near the War Memorial on North Terrace. The closest train station is the Adelaide city station on North Terrace.

You can plan your journey via Adelaide Metro.

Is there car parking near the State Library?

The nearest car park is Wilson's Adelaide Central car park, 225 North Terrace, next to David Jones.

There is paid metered street parking along Kintore Ave and Victoria Drive.

Where is the wheelchair and stroller access?

Access to the Spence Wing first floor and the Mortlock Wing is via the lift in the glass foyer entrance of the library.

Access to the Institute Building is via the external ramp on the Kintore Ave entrance or via the internal ramp between the Institute Building and the Spence Wing (opposite the Treasures Wall).

There is on-street disabled parking available in the nearby roads. View more information and maps of Adelaide City Council's Disability parking for permit holders.

How do I check if the Mortlock Chamber is open when I plan to visit?

The Mortlock Wing and Treasures Wall are venues for hire and subject to occasional closures due to functions and special events, please check our Open Hours for any venue closures on the day of your tour to avoid disappointment.

Is there a cafe at the State Library?

There is a cafe located in the back of the glass foyer at the State Library. View more information about the cafe and tenants.


What is Eventbrite?

At the State Library we use Eventbrite for our event and program registrations. When you register for an event or program, you will be asked to provide your name and email address. Eventbrite will then prompt you to create a password so that you can manage your bookings. For information about what happens to your contact details please view our privacy statement.

How do I book into an event, tour or program?

Find the event, tour or program you would like to book. On the page about the event, tour or program you will notice a yellow button called 'Book now' as well as registration cart on the page. 

Choose the number of tickets you need then follow the prompts by filling in your details. We use Eventbrite at the State Library for our event and education programs.

I can’t attend the event, how do I cancel my registration?

You will need to cancel your registration via Eventbrite by logging in to your account.
