Published accounts

A voyage to Terra Australis with Atlas was published on 19 July 1814. Flinders had begun working on his text and charts when a prisoner of war in Mauritius. On returning to England, he concentrated on compiling the narrative and preparing his charts for publication.

In addition to Flinders' description of the voyage and circumnavigation, the two volumes of A voyage to Terra Australis featured a summary of earlier voyages of discovery to Terra Australis, and details of the author's detainment at Mauritius. Four appendixes recorded findings in navigation science, and Robert Brown's writings about the botany of the continent. Commenting on his style of writing, Flinders modestly stated that:

'Matter, rather than manner, was the object of my anxiety '
