State Library of South Australia

Explore your memories of play

Date: 28 November 2016

Play is an important part of all our lives but what is it and why do people play?

In 2017 these two questions will be explored through a delightful exhibition and learning program using historical toys, games and stories from the unique collections of the State Library.

About the Play exhibition

The exhibition, Play: Objects of play from the State Library of South Australia's collections, takes you on a discovery of the aspects of play including music, dance and theatre, outdoor activity, militaria toys, children's clubs, Aboriginal childhood, science fiction, universal toys used across generations and the fleeting found objects of play.

Most pieces are drawn from the Children's Literature Research Collection, one of the State Library's premier heritage research collections, in a display of never-before-seen objects and old favourites.

This exhibition is sure to evoke memories and create new ones as you think about what play is and what it means for you and your family.

Exhibition opens 10 February 2017 until 28 May 2017 in the Treasures Wall.

Learning program for schools

A Playful Past, a learning program co-created by children for children, provides a fascinating look into the world of play through historical toys, games and stories. Students will learn about the stories of childhood and significant events at different moments in South Australia's history including federation and exploration.

This program is suitable for primary years 3-5 and runs from 20 February to 26 May 2017 (excluding school holidays). If you're interested in this program for students, bookings are required and available through Community Learning.
