2018 Genealogy Gems Series at the State Library of SA

Come and join us at the State Library of SA as we present a series of free family history talks on the third Thursday each month at 1pm.

This year the program runs from March through to November, all session are free but booking is essential. We look forward to seeing you!

18 October: Researching your locality

This session covers the range of resources both digital and hardcopy available through the State Library of South Australia that can assist you in researching the locality you are interested in.

15 November: What did they do? Researching the occupations of your ancestors

How to locate and access documents which record the occupations or your ancestors. Find out more about common and unusual occupations and discuss the meaning behind occupational titles.

19 April: Lifelines - the fragile nature of cemetery internment records

Learn the history of cemeteries managed by the Adelaide Cemeteries Authority, notably at West Terrace (the oldest working metropolitan cemetery in Australia), the challenge of interpreting cemetery records, the fact that the Authority needs to keep records in perpetuity and how they make this information available to the public.

17 May: Indigenous family history resources at State Records of South Australia

Unlocking our Indigenous past using the Archives of State Records via resources developed by the Aboriginal Access Team.

Learn about the unique datasets available in the Genealogy SA collection that can help you learn more about your family history.

16 August: Preserving your digital story

Learn about the long-term care of your digital media such as digital images, video, documents and audio files. Emphasis will be placed on the vulnerability of different digital formats and tips on preservation strategies that aim to achieve long term storage at home.

20 September: Ships ahoy! Maritime records at the National Archives

The National Archives holds a wide range of maritime records dating from the 1850s onwards. Whether you are searching for a deserter or a lighthouse keeper, want to find about more about the service of your seafaring ancestor or the ships they sailed on, these records hold much of interest to the family historian. Some of this material has recently been digitised so find out more about how to access it online.
