The Day Hairy Maclary Came to Town

Date: 21 April 2015

The State Library of South Australia's forecourt was a sea of delighted children on Sunday, 29 March 2015 when Hairy Maclary came to town for the family Fun Day. The Fun Day marked the opening of the Lynley Dodd: A Retrospective exhibition at the State Library. This exhibition has been made possible with generous funding from the State Library of South Australia Foundation.

Our Hairy Maclary Fun Day saw record numbers of families visit our Library. With about 10,000 people of all ages coming, it was the largest number of people to ever visit the State Library on one day. Dame Lynley Dodd, signing books on the day, was amazed with the numbers that came to see her and her adored animal characters.

The popularity of the day did take us by surprise and resulted in some unfortunate waits for activities and entertainment. We have received valuable feedback via social media and email from people attending the day. We have held our first meeting to talk about the day and how we can learn from it. All comments have been taken on board and are now being used for planning our 2016 Family Fun Day.
