George Pitt, the first professional archivist appointed in 1948.

The South Australian archives were established in 1919 as a unit of the Public Library as the State Library was then known. The appointment of George Pitt (1891 - 1972) as archivist, a position he held until 1948, was the first professional archival appointment in Australia.

Newspaper reports of the time record that from the beginning, as is the case now, the archives were supported by generous donations from South Australians.
