APRIL

Royal Australian Mint-Release of Women's Suffrage Centenary Coin
The Royal Australian Mint will be releasing a new $5 coin to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Women's Suffrage in South Australia. The coin features leading women's political activist of the time, Mary Lee. The coin will be launched in South Australia and is the first 'bi-metallic' (a cupro-nickel 'ring' and an aluminium-bronze 'dump' ) coin ever to be produced in Australia.

3 (until June) They Paved the Way
Exhibition portraying women's part in early life of the Prospect Hill district. Display of washing aids, utensils, early sewing machines, clothes, fancy work. Venue: Prospect Hill Museum and Anne Russell House (Post Office, Prospect Hill).

4 Book Launch-Puzzle it Out
Launch of Valerie Yon's Crossword Puzzle book on historical women of note.

5-30 Patterns of Connection
An exhibition of large scale cibachromes of archival, 19th Century Aboriginal portraits, placed in fish-eye photographs of bush landscapes. The work of.Aboriginal photographer, Leah King Smith, depicts.a series of brooding, desperate, yet finally affirmative images. Venue: Festival Theatre Foyer, Adelaide Festival Centre.

8 (until May 7) Kate Breakey Exhibition
An exhibition of 18 new photographic works by Kate Breakey from her Mathematics Series and her Law of Physics series. Both series deal with basic principles; tools for illustrating the laws governing the natural world. Venue: Artspace, Adelaide Festival Centre.

8–29 Memento, Celebration and Sentimentality—Jewellery Exhibition
A contemporary jewellery exhibition by the Gray Street Workshop's Julie Blyfield, inspired by the 1992 archaeological dig at the East End of Adelaide, in which she was involved as a volunteer. The work will relate to the traditions of jewellery and women, including history, commemoration and preciousness. Venue: Jam Factory, Lion Arts Centre.

11 (until May 7) 100 Years of Housework
A major exhibition portraying the relationship between the development of domestic appliances and technology and the emancipation of women. Venue: Myer Centre, Rundle Mall, Adelaide.

Mid April Women in Sport—Commemorative Display
A display by the South Australian Government's Division of Recreation, Sport and Racing, of photographs and memorabilia from women who have made a major contribution to sport and recreation. Venue: Myer Centre, Rundle Mall, Adelaide.

15 Women in Gaol
Launch by noted Aboriginal social reformer, Polly Sumner, of an exhibition documenting the treatment of women in South Australia's penal system. The exhibition will be included in the usual gaol tours conducted by the Adelaide Gaol Preservation Society every Sunday throughout the year. Special tours may also be arranged by appointment including group bookings for day or evening. Venue: Adelaide Gaol, 18 Gaol Rd, Thebarton.

15 Garden Party—Woman's Christian Temperance Union SA
In honour of Elizabeth Webb Nicholls, founding member of the original Suffrage Committee. Mrs Nicholls was a resident of Prospect. There will be musical items and non-alcoholic drinks and nibbles served. Venue: St Helen's Park, Prospect.

15 (until May 29) SA Women Artists: Fifty Years (1890-1940)
A major exhibition designed to raise the profile and status of SA women artists. Involving new research and publication, the exhibition will.particularly focus on how women have influenced and changed Australian art. This significant event is a joint venture between the Art Gallery of South Australia and the Women's Suffrage Centenary Steering Committee. Postcards featuring the works of art will be available for sale. Venue: Art Gallery of SA.

15 -16 Mobil Netball Superleague
The two top netball teams from each State compete in a national series to determine the Australian champions. Adelaide Garville and Adelaide Contax will be competing in 1994. Five rounds of the series and the final will be played in Adelaide as accredited Suffrage Centenary events. Venue: Clipsal Powerhouse Stadium, 44a Crittenden Road, Findon.

23-24. The Three R's—Recession, Restructure and Recovery: The Agenda for Women and Girls.
A national Australian Women's Education Coalition conference, addressing a range of topics such as Aboriginal education, peace education, multiculturalism, sexual harassment, affirmative action in employment and child care. Venue: Adelaide High School, West Terrace, Adelaide.

23 -25 National Labor Women's Conference
Organised by the Australian Labor Party. to coincide with the Centenary celebrations in South Australia. Venue: Adelaide Convention Centre.

29 (until May 1) Beta Sigma Phi 14th National Convention
The convention, being held in Adelaide to coincide with the Centenary, has the theme 'A Grand Heritage', which highlights the vital role women have played, and continue to play, in shaping our nation. Major aim of the convention is to provide participants with the opportunity to acquire new knowledge and experiences—achieved through formal sessions, workshops and group discussions. A celebrated African musician and cook, Darinda Haffner will entertain on the opening night. Venue: Ramada Grand Hotel, Glenelg.

30 Our Cultures for Peace: Women Building Bridges
The Women's International League for Peace and Freedom (SA) warmly invite all women and girls to a one-day forum `Our Cultures for Peace: Women Building Bridges'. Nine women from different ethnic and cultural backgrounds will speak on what growing up female in their particular culture can contribute to an understanding of world peace. The panels will include an Aboriginal woman, women of Asian heritage, from the Pacific, of Irish and Southern European heritage, an Israeli woman and a Palestinian woman. All participants will have the chance to explore their own cultural heritage, build solidarity with their cultural group, build connections across cultures and.focus on our work to end racism. The day will begin with some shared music and dancing. Venue: Disability Information and Resource Centre, 195 Gilles Steet Adelaide.

April (until May) The Barbara Hanrahan Memorial Exhibition— Covers and Prints.
A tribute to one of Australia's foremost contemporary women authors and artists. Exhibition of her literary and artistic work including memorabilia. Venue: State Library of South Australia.

Port Pirie Women's Keepsake Garden
The launch of a Port Pirie Women's Keepsake Garden, an acknowledgment of the continuing role of women in the development and life of the city. Venue: Port Pirie Tourism and Arts Centre, 3 Mary Elie Street, Port Pirie.

Women and Water
The launch of social and pictorial history booklet by the Engineering and Water Supply Department of women's contribution to the State's water services. Specific cases of women's contribution, past and present, will be explored.

15 Anniversary Celebration of the Working Women's Centre.
Official opening of new premises and 15th Anniversary Celebration of the Working Women's Centre (SA) which aims to improve the position of women in relation to paid employment. Venue: Norwich Centre, 55 King William St, Adelaide.

Into Our Own Hands
Launch of this special kit prepared by the Women's Studies Resource Centre, to mark the Suffrage Centenary. The kit is designed for use by upper primary and junior secondary students and aims to increase awareness amongst girls of the process of creating change through active participation in decision making and political structures. The video depicts the action taken by a group of girls when they discover some trees near their school are going to be cut down. The activities and information in the learning resource package explore issues around girls, women, power and decision making.

The WEA Winter Course Guide will feature a Women's Suffrage Celebration cover.

1 (until Jul 31) The Penguin Club
A static display setting out the aims and objectives of The Penguin Club and its relevance to the women of SA as a Club encouraging `communication with confidence. The Lady Mayoress, Lynette Ninio will officially open the display on Sunday May 1. Workshops and meetings will take place during this period. Venue: Old Parliament House, The Kingston Room.

A Playback Theatre performance for women to celebrate their achievements by telling.the personal stories of their lives.

13-25 Sue Lorraine—New Works.
Solo exhibition/installation of jewellery and objects by Sue Lorraine. Drawing on a vocabulary of visceral imagery and metaphor, the works in this exhibition explore the body as a site for historical, political and social comment. Venue: Art Space, Adelaide Festival Centre.

19 Sport and Mature Aged Women

21 Through the Glass Ceiling.
A National Council of Women SA conference targeted at women aged 35–45 years.in the paid work force, who are seeking ways and means to break the invisible barrier to success. Venue: Centennial Building, North Terrace Campus, University of South Australia.

20 Sportswomen Awards Dinner.
Sportwomen's Hall of Fame including celebration dinner and photographic exhibition. Convened by Womensport & Recreation SA. Venue: Hellenic Club, Sturt Street, Adelaide.

25-28 Toxic Girls
Unley Youth Theatre, in association with the Adelaide Festival Centre Trust, presents Toxic Girls by Mardi McConnochie. The premiere season of a provocative new play about young women's sexuality. This play aims to explode the 'toxic' stereotypes of women created by contemporary popular culture, and provide role models for positive sexual choices, preferences and behaviours. Venue: The Space, Adelaide Festival Centre.

25 Adelaide Symphony Orchestra 'Meet the Music Series'
Premiere of Song Cycle based on poems of poet, Kathleen Raine and composed by Nigel Butterley. The soloist will be Australian soprano, Marilyn Richardson. Venue: Adelaide Town Hall.

A book prepared by Elizabeth Fisher describing the lives of the women of the Duff, Gebhardt and Fisher family companies.

May (until June) Honourable Prophets
A play based on the Suffrage Movement performed by Year 12 drama students, Murray Bridge High School. There will be three performances at.the school, followed by a tour throughout.the Murray Mallee.

Book Launch—Read All About It
A book of primary sources in the Mortlock Library such as newspaper accounts, dealing with the social background and specific development of the suffrage movement in South Australia between 1885 and 1894. The publication will be of special interest to secondary and tertiary students.

JUNE

2-12 International Women's Basketball Championships.
Teams from 16 countries will participate. The championships are an accredited Suffrage Centenary event. Venue: Clipsal Powerhouse Stadium, 44a Crittenden Road, Adelaide.

2 Women's Suffrage Centenary Stamps
Special event for the release of this special series of stamps and their postmarking. .The series will include a first day cover, two 45c domestic postage stamps in an issue of 350,000, one $1.40 stamp in an issue of 50,000, a set of two postcards, and a book relating to the special issue of stamps.

5 Commemorative Paving Stones—SA Women in Sport.
Women who have contributed to sport will be honoured with their names engraved on paving stones laid at State Sports Park, Gepps Cross. Sponsored by the Division of Recreation, Sport and Racing and the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Mid June Women Performing Compact Disc
Launch of a various artists' CD which showcases the quality and variety of talent demonstrated.by women performers in South Australia. This exciting initiative is an Australian first and comprises 13 tracks of which 11 are original pieces. It is designed to overcome some of the disadvantages women experience in a male dominated area of the arts and popular culture.

17 Working Women's Stories.
Launch of radio broadcasts, Working Women's Stories on 5UV. A wide-ranging oral history of women activists in the SA workforce, with a strong focus on trade union women. Prepared by the Centre for Labour Studies-University of Adelaide. Venue: Trades and Labour Council.

17 (until Jul 31) Berkeley / Walker Exhibition
An exhibition of the works of two sisters, Martha Berkeley and Theresa Walker. Martha Berkeley was South Australia's first professional woman artist, painting watercolour views of Adelaide and its environs, as well as fine, commissioned miniatures of colonial men and women. Theresa Walker was Australia's first woman sculptor. She made wax medallion portraits of colonial residents, first in Adelaide and then later in Launceston, Hobart, Melbourne and Sydney. Venue: Art Gallery of SA.

22 & 25 Seminars for Young Women-Australian Studies
The Flinders University Australian Studies Department will convene two events to involve senior secondary girls in the celebration of Women's Suffrage and inform them of women's subsequent struggles and achievements. An introductory lecture will be presented by five women who have struggled to achieve in their fields of endeavour, followed by a day long series of seminars and tutorials on topics suggested by students, with women significant in their fields. Venue: Matthew Flinders Theatre, Flinders University.

24-26 National Meeting—Women's International League for Peace and Freedom Australia
This weekend meeting of the Australian Section of WILPF is a fully residential weekend, where policy decisions to guide the next three year's work of WILPF in Australia will be made. Women considering membership, are welcome as observers. Venue: Nunyara Conference Centre, Belair.

24-26 Poor Johanna
Viva Voce presents the world premiere production of `Poor Johanna', written by Robyn Archer and Judith Rodriguez. What happens to a woman who isn't considered beautiful? This play reflects the bizarre and true story of a woman in the 1850s who crosses the gender line and lives her life as a male boundary rider in the Australian Bush. Venue: Tandanya Aboriginal Cultural Institute, 253 Grenfell Street Adelaide.

June (until Jul 24) Nu ren (Woman)—Over 100 Years.
A photographic installation by Deborah Paauwe exploring.the changing role of Chinese Women within the SA community since 1894. Venue: Greenaway Art Gallery, 39 Rundle Street, Kent Town.

June (Sundays until October) Politics on Sunday for Women
Once a month series of public debates on.women's issues running throughout winter from June to October. Venue: Governor Hindmarsh Hotel, Hindmarsh.

June (until November) Rocky River Women's Workshops.
Following a survey of women's needs in the Rocky River Council area in February, the women will run public workshops in the identified.topics which may be as diverse as animal husbandry, car maintenance, tractor use, Thai cooking, resume preparation. There will also be tree planting festivities and a celebration.party of the Women's Suffrage Centenary later in the year. The tree planting will take place in Laura.
