Rose Gan, author
Connecting Adelaide’s past with its sister city Penang, visiting author Rose Gan brings history vividly to life. In this captivating talk, the author of Penang Chronicles traces Colonel William Light’s remarkable journey; from Eurasian army officer to the celebrated surveyor and planner of Adelaide.
Drawing on letters, journals and overlooked records, Gan reveals how Light’s path was shaped not only by ambition and talent, but by prejudice, limited patronage and the complexities of his mixed heritage.
British by birth, Rose Gan has been based in Southeast Asia for many years. A former teacher of History and Latin, and later a docent and editor, she is now a successful popular historian and award-nominated author. Her celebrated Penang Chronicles series earned a The Star Readers’ Choice Award nomination and is widely praised for bringing overlooked histories vividly to life.
