South Australian residents can become a State Library member today to:

  • register for online access to eResources giving you access to articles and abstracts, magazines, scholarly journals, eBooks, databases, indexes, newspapers, encyclopedias and lots more
  • access heritage items such as newspapers, rare books, and maps
  • request items from storage
  • book computers
  • print and photocopy and much more.

We’ll create a digital membership for you straight away. All you need to access collections showcasing the stories of South Australia is a valid email address. You can also visit us to collect a physical library card to access even more onsite services and facilities.

Interstate residents can register for membership and when you arrive in South Australia, you can visit the State Library to collect your library card.

How can I get a physical library card?

We’ll create a digital membership for South Australian residents, and you can also visit us to collect a physical library card.

Come to the Information Desk and show your ID to collect your library card to access the library’s Somerville Reading Room and other onsite services and facilities.

To protect and preserve heritage collections, fragile reference material is available to access in the Somerville Reading Room.

How do I reset my password?

You can reset your membership password here.

My card has expired, what do I do?

Your library card is valid for three years. If your card has expired, please re-register here.

Can overseas visitors register for a temporary card?

Overseas visitors are welcome to sign up for a temporary card when you visit the library in person.

What if I don’t need a card?

You do not need a library card to access current newspapers and magazines, quiet study areas, and our open access collection. The State Library is a non-lending research library.
