State Library of South Australia named world’s second most beautiful library

In a proud moment for South Australia, the State Library of South Australia has been crowned the second most beautiful library in the world in this year’s prestigious 1000 Libraries Awards 2025

The award, decided by more than 200,000 online votes from library lovers across the globe, puts Adelaide’s beloved Mortlock Chamber in the international spotlight, and we think rightfully so.

Known for its tiered galleries, cozy study nooks, wrought-iron balconies, 40,000 books, ticking clock and timeless grandeur, the Mortlock Chamber is a comforting blend of architecture, history and storytelling. Whether you're a regular or a visitor, it is an enchanting space that captivates the imagination of all.

This global recognition is more than just a win for a library building. It’s a resounding recognition of our state’s commitment to preserving and celebrating our cultural heritage, which is undisputedly world-class.

Whilst temporarily closed for recarpeting, we can’t wait to reopen the doors in Spring and invite you back in to explore the Mortlock Chamber’s enchanting space.

Thank you to everyone who voted and helped showcase the beauty of your State Library to the world.
