The Libraries Board of South Australia is developing an integrated Strategic Plan 2027-2032 that will guide the future of the State Library and public libraries across South Australia.
As one of South Australia's most important cultural institutions, the State Library is exploring how it can continue to inspire learning, creativity, connection and discovery for generations to come. Your ideas, experiences and aspirations will help inform that journey.

What is happening?
The Libraries Board of South Australia is developing a new Strategic Plan for 2027-2032. To help inform that work, we are inviting South Australians to share their views on the future of the State Library and public libraries across the state. Feedback gathered through this consultation will help identify priorities, opportunities and aspirations for the years ahead.
Why are we seeking feedback?
Libraries belong to the communities they serve. This consultation is an opportunity for South Australians to help shape the future direction of library services, collections, programs, learning opportunities and community spaces. Your feedback will help ensure the Strategic Plan reflects the needs and aspirations of our communities.
Who can participate?
Anyone can participate. We welcome feedback from library users, community members, researchers, educators, students, volunteers, staff, partners, supporters and people who may not currently use library services. Every perspective is valuable.
When is the consultation open?
Public consultation opens on 28 September 2026. The YourSAy survey is expected to close on 26 October 2026. A public workshop will be held on 12 October 2026.

- Future opportunities and priorities for libraries
Is this consultation only about the State Library?
No. The Libraries Board is developing a single Strategic Plan that will guide both the State Library of South Australia and the public library network across South Australia. The consultation seeks views on the future of libraries as a whole.
Have decisions already been made?
No. This consultation is intended to gather ideas, perspectives and aspirations from the community. Feedback will be carefully considered alongside the Libraries Board's responsibilities, legislative obligations and strategic priorities before decisions are made. Based on the consultation information provided, a draft Strategic Plan will also be released for further consultation before it is finalised.
What happens after the consultation closes?
Feedback from the survey, workshop and other engagement activities will be analysed and considered by the Libraries Board. The findings will help inform the development of a draft Strategic Plan. A summary of key themes and outcomes will be shared as the project progresses.
Will there be another opportunity to provide feedback?
Yes. A draft Strategic Plan will be released for public consultation before it is finalised. This will provide a further opportunity for stakeholders and community members to comment on the proposed direction. Based on the consultation materials, the draft plan will be informed by feedback received during this first stage of engagement.
